Former BreakPoint staffer Eric Metaxas has penned the first new full-length biography of martyred Christian theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer in 40 years. Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy is a richly textured look at Bonhoeffer’s upbringing, theological journey, and his decision to take responsibility for the ethical decision to cast his lot with those who were determined to assassinate Adolf Hitler.

Metaxas was able to interview people who knew Bonhoeffer, and his journey to Germany to research this book was a personal one, as the maternal side of his family is German. In fact, one of Metaxas’s grandfathers died during World War II. As a result, learning more about Bonhoeffer’s work, set in that particular time in German history, connected deeply with Metaxas’s own family story.

I had the chance to talk with Eric about his new book, which has been getting rave reviews nationally from Christian and secular outlets alike. We’re proud that a BreakPoint alumnus has offered the world a fuller story of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who refused to back down on numerous occasions before Caesar.
