In the New York Times last month, Eric Weiner suggested we need a Steve Jobs of religion. Not someone who will invent a new religion, but “a new way of being religious...that is straightforward and unencumbered and absolutely intuitive.” Why? Because, the national conversation about God is not going well, he says. It’s been co-opted by True Believers and Angry Atheists.

So Eric considers himself a “none,” one of those without religious affiliation and no axe to grind either way -- a category which is exploding among emerging adults.

While he’s right that the tone of religious debate is more angry than helpful, his reasons for being a “none” are just odd. He wants a religion that’s comfortable and accommodating, one that works for him. That’s a common mistake about religion, and a reason Christians need to be able to defend that Christianity is actually true and why it matters, and not just the feelings it gives.  I’ll talk more about this tomorrow. For ThePointRadio.org, I’m John Stonestreet.
