What’s the difference between Winston Churchill and Sherlock Holmes? Well, according to a large cross-section of British teenagers, one’s historical and the other not—but not in the order you think.

In a recent survey of British teens, one- fifth thought Winston Churchill, the Prime Minister who led Britain through World War II, was fictional, and a majority thought the detective of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s novels actually lived on Baker Street.

At least half also believed that Robin Hood and Elanor Rigby (from the Beatles’ song) really existed too.

I think there’s more to this than just bad education. C. S. Lewis called it chronological snobbery – being so addicted to the latest and greatest stuff, but detached from our own histories.
