In the Wrong Hands...Ours By: John Stonestreet|Published: June 19, 2012 12:00 AM Technology without virtue can be deadly. For the Chuck Colson Center for Christian Worldview, I’m John Stonestreet with The Point. Listen Now | DownloadAccording to a recent article in Nature, geneticists at the University of Washington in Seattle have succeeded in reconstructing fetal DNA from the mother and father’s blood. This means doctors could potentially test for genetic defects in a safe and non-invasive way before babies are born. This is terrible news — not because we have a new and safer diagnostic technique, but because we know where this road leads. Existing technology already tests babies for Down syndrome in the womb. And as I’ve shared with you before on “The Point,” nine out of ten of those babies who test positive are aborted. Diagnosing down syndrome is dangerous not because it’s a fatal defect, but because our society targets them for extinction because they’re inconveniently different. Which differences are next? The one you have? This technology will only enable the new eugenics — the kind not in concentration camps but in medical labs. Pro-lifers need to be ready to stand against it.
