We know that Christianity explains what’s wrong with the human condition. The fall we read about in Genesis 3 explains the existence of sin and evil in a way that atheism and pop spirituality cannot. But Christianity also explains the human potential to enjoy the world. Genesis 1 and 2 explains why we get pleasure out of things unrelated to our survival like creative stories, great conversation, innovative athletic performances, and captivating artistry. It explains why humans are driven to bring new means of enjoyment to the world through food, drink, invention, excursion, and beauty.
This has implications for Christian witness. Yes, we need to recognize sin and evil for what it is, especially when we find it in our own lives, and appeal to the redemption found in Christ. But it also means that enjoyment of God’s world is not only not bad. It’s good, and it’s a way to point the world to the God who made it that way. For thePointRadio.org, I’m John Stonestreet.
