Inspired by this article, I've made Dickensblog part of the Philippine relief effort to which Jason referred. Here's the paragraph that caught my eye:
Damaged textbooks and workbooks for public school students will be replaced by the Department of Education, but not all other books. Whether used or new, books don’t stand a chance against mud and water, and had to be all thrown out. Many public schools need donations of story books (series from Scholastics, Adarna, Anvil, Hiyas, Lampara; classics like Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, Jane Austen etc.), reference books (encyclopedia, dictionaries, atlases, charts), SRA kits, wall clocks, bookshelves, copiers, tables and chairs for their libraries. [Emphasis mine]
If you'd like to help replace the books that were lost, go here and click on the donation link to donate via PayPal or check. Jason is helping to get the money where it needs to go, to buy the replacement books. So far, we've raised $100.
Since starting this fundraiser, I've heard from a couple of people in the Philippines who confirmed the need for books and expressed their gratitude for the effort. So if you can give even a little bit, it will be very much appreciated.

The questions to ask are: Is castration really a good medical practice, and is it being used for justice or revenge? For a start, see Chuck Colson’s 1994 response to this issue.
Not many of us are thrilled about this weekend's time change. Blogger Ryan Sager points out that there are some very good reasons for that. (Article contains mild profanity.) Thanks to Roberto for this one. READ FULL ARTICLE »

In related news, Jollyblogger David Wayne has an update on his own health here. I know he'd appreciate prayer as well.

"Why is there such a fury against religion now? Because religion is the one reliable force that stands in the way of the power of the strong over the weak. The one reliable force that forms the foundation of the concept of the rule of law.
The one reliable force that restrains the hand of the man of power. In an age of powerworship, the Christian religion has become the principal obstacle to the desire of earthly utopians for absolute power."
