Self-Mortification and the Pope

A USA Today article quotes a book written by Monsignor Slawomir Oder, the primary promoter of the canonization process for the late Pope John Paul II, in which he claims that Pope John Paul II practiced self-mortification by whipping himself with a belt, sleeping on the floor, and fasting. Monsignor Oder defended the actions by referring to them as “an instrument of Christian perfection.”

Whether it is true or not, I’m curious what the rest of you think. Are whipping yourself with a belt, sleeping on the floor, and fasting appropriate instruments of Christian perfection?
