In the Name of Jesus!

Who'd have thunk that a fashion designer with an eye on the bottom line would have trademarked the precious name of Jesus?

BasicNet applied for and won the right to trademark "Jesus." Now, the name "Jesus" is off the table for as long as the company keeps its trademark current.

While the general council for BasicNet has assured churches that it won't bring lawsuits against them for printing Jesus on a T-shirt, for example, other companies had better beware, because BasicNet is guarding against would-be merchandising usurpers. I do hope BasicNet's trademark will help minimize the amount of kitsch Christian companies produce bearing Jesus Christ's name!

But was a trademark judge right in granting BasicNet the right to own such a sacred name?

No. It is already public domain.
