Stepping out of the shadows

More prisoners than ever before are reporting sexual assaults, and the majority of the culprits are prison staff. A new report by the Inspector General reveals that accusations against federal prison officials have doubled in the past eight years. Now, 92 out of the 93 federal prisons have had alleged sexual abuse by prison staff in the past eight years. Though public outrage at prison rape is growing, the Bureau of Prisons is doing little to make a real difference to protect the men and women behind bars.
