Open book thread: Literary witness

Read any good novels lately? Chuck Colson hopes that you have. Here's why.

When you're done reading Chuck's commentary, come back here and tell us which novels you've been reading lately and/or which ones you're hoping to start soon. Or visit our new BreakPoint Recommended Novels list to get some recommendations! And if a lot of them are new to you, don't feel bad: This English major has completed only 15 of the 33 entries on the list (counting each series mentioned as one entry).

Comments:

Actually the idea behind Time Travellers Wife sounded quite beautiful. Though I never read it.
Most of the books I read have violence in them, and sex can be avoided with a few page flips.
"Life of Pi" was good. I can't remember the last novel I read.. "Tale of Two Cities" and "Cat's Cradle" around Christmas, I think.

"Time Traveler's Wife" has some sex and violence but is a *very* good novel.

First, I couldn't agree more with Chuck's commentary. A story is one of the best, if not the best, ways to communicate the gospel. We sell others short if we think fiction cannot penetrate their hearts.

Second, what a great list! I've only read 11, but want to read a lot on that list. Next in line:
- Cormac McCarthy (I'm hearing about him from all sides)
- Walker Percy
- Evelyn Waugh, "Brideshead Revisited"
- Dostoyevsky "The Idiot"

Third, I don't know if I can list a favourite of those I've read, but the most recent was Miller's "Canticle for Leibowitz"... superb.

Fourth, I just read "Life of Pi". Anyone else read? I really enjoyed it. It actually has this theme of what is a good story and what story will we tell? Very interesting, I thought.

Fifth, I have "The Time Traveler's Wife" on my next-to-read-novel list. (I haven't seen the movie). I'm not sure if it's good/bad though. I hear good things, but questionable sources. I think it would be interesting. Anyone read?
