Since the passing of former NBA player Manute Bol last week, there have been a number of moving tributes to the gentle giant who committed his life to improving life for the impoverished and persecuted in his native land of Sudan. Jon Shields’s article in the Wall Street Journal is a particularly touching piece, focusing on Bol’s Christian faith, and how it guided him to sacrifice all he had for others.
Surrounded by a culture of sport that places both material gain and self-aggrandizement as chief virtues, it is striking to see an example of one who is not only willing to give of his possessions and wealth, but to “make himself a fool” to follow God’s leading. A better example of Paul’s urging to “be of the same mind as Christ” in Philippians 2:5-11 would be hard to find. May he rejoice in the Glory in which he now resides, and may many others come to know that Glory as a result of his example. Requiescat in pace.
